Newsletters
In the current environment, newsletters are one of the best ways to get reliable news and information. So, here are some that I recommend, organized into rough categories:
Community
- We’re Here – One of the most positive newsletters you can find. Getting this every Friday is really like seeing the smog clear and getting that breath of crisp air after a cleansing rainstorm. An absolute must-read to balance out the horrors.
- Dense Discovery – A weekly digest of curated links, services, and pages to help break out of the algorithm and discover what hides in the depths of the internet.
Design
- BrandNew from UnderConsideration – A weekly newsletter of all the notable changes in company branding across the world. Great for designers who want to stay in-the-know on the latest brand trends.
Current Events
- International Intrigue – This is the preeminent newsletter for anything related to international affairs or geopolitical analysis. It’s also quite a great source for the most notable global news, especially given its diplomatic bent.
Online Philosophy
As a webmaster of a site on the indie web, and someone who thinks a lot about how online communities organize, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention sites that have been influential in my own journey with internet culture and philosophy.

Digital Gardening
A Brief History & Ethos of the Digital Garden by Maggie Appleton – This is the primer on Digital Gardening and breaking out of chronological feeds. Appleton includes tons of links to examples and other pages on the topic, and the site is itself a great example of Digital Gardening in action!
The Garden and the Stream: A Technopastoral by Mike Caulfield – Digital Gardening’s ur-text, establishing the modern term and laying down fundamental concepts that would grow into the wider movement. A little old, but still a great read to better understand how Digital Gardening emerged.
